PRESS RELEASE: “After Abuja, Nigerian youth march in Lagos April 13″

After a massively successful rally at the National Assembly in Abuja on March 16 that continues to be talked about weeks after, young Nigerians under the aegis of the ENOUGHISENOUGH (EiE) Nigeria coalition have announced a Lagos rally, which will hold at the Governor’s Office in Alausa on Tuesday April 13, 2010.

The protesters will gather at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Anglican Church car park that morning at 11am, and march to Alausa. “The governor’s office has already been notified about this as well as the authorities of the Nigerian police force,” said Adebola Williams, who is one of the rally’s coordinators.

ENOUGHISENOUGH Nigeria, the coalition of change-seeking youth leaders and young professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, celebrities, activists and students from across the country, will march to the Lagos State Governor’s Office where they will present 4 Key Demands to the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, for onward passage to the National Council of State and the Governors’ Forum.

“The Lagos leg of the ENOUGHISENOUGH Nigeria protests is coming a month after the historic protest rally of Tuesday the 16th of March 2010, that saw hundreds of young people engage in a standoff with armed policemen deployed by the authorities of the National Assembly in Abuja to prevent them from gaining access to the leadership of the Assembly,” said ‘Gbenga Sesan, ED of Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, who is also one of the coordinators. “That rally made the headlines on print and electronic national media and was covered by leading international news organizations, including the CNN and AFP, and we are not about to stop.”

Joining the young people at the Abuja rally was a slew of prominent Nigerians including Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Stella Damascus, Omawumi Megbele, Peace Fiberesima, Charly Boy, the Rooftop MCs, amongst others.

“Some people have asked why are we marching in Lagos and we say why not? The move for change by young people across the country doesn’t end in Abuja,” said Stella Damascus, one of the leaders of the movement. “Governor Fashola might be doing well, but this is beyond him; this is about a system and this is about making a statement. We are not just going there to complain. We are going to send a strong message through him and through the media that in 2011, we are mobilising millions of young people to register, to vote and to protect their votes. Because that really is the solution to most of our problems: If people have control over who is in power, those in power will begin to respond to the people’s needs and demands.”

Excerpts of the demand for the Lagos rally are:

(a) Electoral Reform: “We demand that the Uwais Panel Report on Electoral Reform be adopted as is, as they present the clearest path towards transparent and corruption-free elections.”

(b) Corruption: “There are littered across the country, corruption cases involving key ministries – from power to petroleum – parastatals and those held in cahoots with members of Corporate Nigeria. The government must show its seriousness in prosecuting these alleged corrupt practices and showing to Nigerians seriousness in solving the problem of graft.”

(c) Security: “We demand a complete overhaul of the country’s security apparatuses and that all the public officials who were responsible for the breakdown in Jos should be, as a matter of urgency, removed.”

(d) Electricity: “6,000 megawatts will not solve the electricity problems of Nigeria, but it’s a good start. Nigerians desperately and urgently need power for the industrial and production centres. We are extending our ultimatum to the federal government – until the end of April – for it to present this plan to the people. If not, we shall target the ministry of power specifically for protest. This promise is not to be taken lightly.”

“ENOUGHISENOUGH Nigeria also wishes to send out a clear message to all Nigerians, and especially those in the corridors of power, that its quest to effect transformation in Nigeria will not be restricted to rallies and public protests alone,” Audu Maikori, the CEO of Chocolate City, said about the strategy to be used by the coalition. “We have a unique opportunity to change Nigeria through the power of our numbers, resolve and collective anger in 2011. We will register enmasse, turn out to vote in our millions, post live updates (pictures, SMS, video, etc) from the voting centres, wait until the winner is announced and confirm that the results are accurate. This is the election in which young people will shock the status quo. Any politician who tries to rig the 2011 elections will be shocked. Enough is indeed enough.”

The organisations involved in this coalition include the Abira Foundation, Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, the Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme, The Future Project’s TakeAction arm, Chocolate City, EME Music, LightUpNigeria, Rise Networks, Gbagyichild Entertaiment, B.L.I.N.G, Avienti, Green Nigeria, amongst others. Information on its activities can be found on www.enoughisenoughnigeria.com.

PIN Seeks Volunteers for Ajegunle.org

Paradigm Initiative Nigeria (PIN) is currently seeking volunteers to help train the next set of change makers through our Ajegunle.org project.

Volunteers are expected to help these young people understand the basics of ICT and Entrepreneurship. The project is interactive and encourages descriptive and action-based learning in an informal learning environment.  The entrepreneurship training focuses on five modules: Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Networking, Finance & Staffing and Risk Management & Social Impact. We seek volunteers for each of these modules.

Requirements:
For each module, we expect the volunteer to:
(a) Demonstrate experiential knowledge of the subject matter
(b) Be willing to train in Ajegunle
(c) Be tolerant with new learners and have the ability to inspire a class size of about 20 – 25 students

The planned timetable for the classes that require additional volunteers follow:
    Adobe Photoshop (May 10-14, 2010)
    Basics of Entrepreneurship I (May 24 – 28, 2010)
Basics of Entrepreneurship II (May 31 – June 4, 2010)

All sessions hold from 1pm to 5pm daily. The training curriculum will be provided for these classes but we will also require volunteers to connect the content with their personal and other real-life experiences. All interested volunteers should please write to ugo.nwosu[at]ajegunle.org or call 08037474312 for additional details.

Thank you for working with us to provide ICT-enabled opportunities for young Nigerians!

    …Let’s Do It!

If this is the way, then lets do it...

"If this is the way, then let's do it!" Photo courtesy Sunday Aghaeze

They say one picture says more that what a thousand words can capture. But for the picture above, you can count in tens of thousands. Many things have been said since the pictures became popular, and I called to speak with the man in the shot, Audu Maikori, CEO of Chocolate City (the label that handles MI and Jesse Jags, among others), to ask him why he dared the barrel – and what was on his mind while he literally paved the way for the surging crowd.

    His words:

Wow, this picture has kept my phone ringing all day and I didn’t even know the moment was captured. I was moved by the fact that many young professionals, celebrities, students and senior citizens came out to express unhappiness about the various things that have kept Nigeria in the dark – and the law makers we ‘elected’ couldn’t even come to meet them to placate them. Having spent 2 hours in sun, they didn’t even have the courtesy to come out and meet their constituents. The pictures from the Jos crisis really got to me; when you compare what Jos has now become to how Jos used to be a beautiful city that had no respect for race or tribe, one would do whatever needs to be done. At that point, my mind was focused on the need for action. I thought, ‘if this is the way, then let’s do it!’ Some people say why risk your life like this? But when I think of the people that died in Jos for just being citizens of our once great country, it pales in comparison to what they went through. What I got out of this experience is that we the youth must use our votes wisely in 2011, we need credible and responsible leaders.

Audu is one more reason why those who are still scared of standing for change should note that we have a unique opportunity to change Nigeria through the power of our numbers, resolve and collective anger in 2011. We will register enmasse, turn out to vote, post live updates (pictures, SMS, video, etc) from the voting centres, wait until the winner is announced and confirm that the results are accurate. If not now, when will we save Nigeria from the minority that keeps assuming that the majority are a bunch of resilient fools. If not us, who? We, as young people, are the majority that is right – and we say enough is enough!

Pictures from the Abuja #enoughisenough rally

In an apparent demonstration of the power of New Media – a tool which will play a prominent role as Nigeria marches towards the 2011 elections, – the March 16 rally of the youth-led Enough is Enough Coalition was followed by numerous people, regardless of location or timezone. While the rally was warming up at the Eagle Square in Abuja, the #enoughisenough hashtag made it’s way to the top (ranging from #10 to #1 at various times) of the list of topics that were most popular (trending) on twitter. See, below, pictures posted live from the rally yesterday – and some that didn’t make it alongside my tweets.

    16 March 2010

The Senate President/The Speaker of the House,
    National Assembly,
    Three Arms Zone,
    Abuja.

    Dear Sir,

Nigerian Youths Say Enough is Enough!

We are a coalition of Nigerian youth leaders, and we are drawn from a diverse pool – young professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, celebrities, journalists, students, amongst others – and we are drawn from across the country, regardless of religion, tribe, location or social status.

We are not the usual stereotype energetic, agitated youth: we are respectable, we are responsible, but above all, we are determined to change our country positively. Many of us are going to be the leaders of the key sections of Nigeria’s society, economy and politics in the near future; in fact some of us already are.

And for the first time ever, such a diverse group of youths is marching to the National Assembly, the home of our Constitution. We have come on a peaceful protest rally to the Nigerian Legislature so that today will be marked in history as the day when a new generation of young Nigerians decided that enough is enough.

Too much in our country has gone so terribly bad, and the blame for this lies squarely on the shoulders of politicians, government and ‘leaders’ who have placed power play, narrow interest and self aggrandisement over and above the welfare and development of Nigerians.

Even after the dark years of military rule, a decade of democracy has now convinced us that if care is not taken, new oppressors are always waiting in the wings, eager to replace conquered ones. Our civilian governments have taken us for granted too often over the last 10 years, over-promising and under-delivering.

We have been cursed with a leadership that has sorely lacked integrity, patriotism, passion, good faith and compassion; a leadership that would rather feed their bellies and egos rather than solve problems. They are ruining our future, they are set to hand over to us a destroyed country and a failed state, and we say NO to that. We have had enough. And enough is truly enough.

We have therefore resolved to actively participate in the battle for the soul of Nigeria . This march is only the first step in a series of many geared step towards creating the conditions for a Nigeria that will no longer make breaking news on CNN.

Our demands for now are the 4 critical areas where we require urgent intervention to secure the future:

    1. The Jos situation makes it clear that the Nigerian state is incapable of securing the lives and limbs of its citizens. How can we have a government and security agencies and people can just go in the dead of the night and slaughter hundreds of women and children? This is in addition to a litany of unsolved murders and wanton kidnappings. Enough is enough! We demand an urgent overhaul of the security and intelligence apparatus in our country: the heads, the structures and the people that power the structures need to go, and they need to go now.

    2. The promise of 6000 megawatts was flagrantly broken and up until now, there has been no roadmap presented to the public on how we intend to keep the promise and #lightupnigeria. We need electricity at the very least from any responsible government and demand that within the month, the government gives a realistic, practical plan to solving this perennial power problem.

    3. The invisible presidency of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and the subsequent disrespect of the constitution show us that the power structure of the country is skewered against the interest of the people and that there is no respect for the constitution. Politicians must realise that the constitution is sacrosanct, over and above any party constitution or the agreements of any unconstitutional forum. We also demand that President Yar’Adua should resume, resign or be removed so that Nigerians know who their leaders are, and the cabal usurping the Presidency can finally be dislodged.

    4. We demand electoral reform. The Uwais report has been lying between the executive and the legislature for months now, and now election timetables have been released. How can we be planning for any kind of serious minded election working with the same corrupt system that both President Yar’Adua and the international community has condemned? Whilst the Uwais Report is imperfect, it contains solid resolutions that will change our electoral landscape. We demand that all its recommendations be passed and implemented before the next elections.

Nigerians aged below 35 constitute more than 70 percent of the population and we are putting you on notice that we intend to begin to use this power. This is only the first of many steps we are going to be taking to ensure that our ‘leaders’ take us seriously. We will continue to rally, to organise and to mobilise young people in an unprecedented way from now till the next elections – through voters registration, party primaries, and the general elections.  Please note these:

    1. We will come out to vote massively this time around, we will be watching closely and we will not leave election centres until all votes our counted.
    2. Anyone who rigs elections this time around will have themselves to blame. Young people across the country – from the North to the South – will be coming out in their millions and they will strongly resist any attempt to rig.
    3. We will have zero tolerance for electoral violence across the country.
    4. Politicians must declare their manifesto and their clear and practical plans to solve major problems in their constituencies. ‘Ghana-must-go’ politics is over. No manifesto and no plan, no votes. We will make sure of that.
    5. Young people will be mobilised to vote only those politicians who were not part of corruption, unconstitutionality and stood for integrity and clear development goals since this dispensation started. Any other person who was part of this old system will be shocked by the embarrassment we will churn out to them next year.

We want a country where infrastructure work, where politicians are committed to the common good, where opportunities for its citizens are fair and possible.

We grew up hearing ourselves addressed as the “leaders of tomorrow,” and now we have realised that it is time they rose to take our destinies into our hands, if we want to stand any chance of witnessing that much-touted “tomorrow.”

Enough is enough. Nigerian youths say enough is enough. We have had enough! We are taking our future in our hands – and we will neither falter nor stop. This journey has just begun!

    God bless Nigeria .

    Yours Faithfully,

    EnoughisEnough Coalition
